A trip to Ann Arbor’s Kerrytown Farmers Market led to fruit of a very delicious kind. We stopped in at Everyday Wines which specializes in wines under $25. We were pleased to find this Michigan dry Riesling.
Peninsula Cellars is a family run winery on the Old Mission Peninsula just north of Traverse City. Michigan is establishing itself as a top producer of quality Riesling and so at $18 this was a “must buy” wine.
It took only one sip for Green Dragon to give me the thumbs up to let me know this vino received her seal of approval. The wine is crisp and refreshing and has its own unique character. Finger Lakes Riesling can have bone-rattling acidity. The Peninsula Cellars had mellowness and balance with very little minerality. There are apple notes with a smidge of lime.
This is a great food wine and, in fact, a nice sipper for just about any time. It has a full body without being heavy and at just 12% alcohol, it doesn’t wrestle with food – just nicely compliments it. This could go well with a nice ham or chicken dish.
Peninsula Cellars has produced a standout Michigan dry Riesling at a crazy good price.
