Dry Creek Valley is a Sonoma AVA known mostly for producing Zinfandel, but the valley actually has more Cabernet Sauvignon planted than any other variety. Cooler than many other parts of Sonoma County, it provides long days of intense sunshine – perfect for ripening Cabernet grapes.
The 2010 vintage in Sonoma provided many challenges for the winemaker. There were late spring rains, a cool summer and then several heat spikes before harvest. But out of adversity has come a worthy wine.
The Dry Creek Vineyard 2010 Cabernet has a juicy aroma of raspberry with a hint of floral. On the palate this is a silky wine with flavors of black cherry and chocolate. The tannins in the wine are somewhat tight, providing good structure. For me, the wine improved as it opened up and a night later it was even better than the first.
Composed of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petite Verdot, the blend is spot on. The wine is aged 18 months in American, French and Hungarian oak.
For $25 this is is a Sonoma Cab to that will entice wine lovers with style and great value.
