This wine hails from a Spanish region that is just beginning to realize its massive winemaking potential. The wine is 100% Garnacha Blanca that is handpicked and aged for two months in French Oak.
The wine is light golden with a slight aroma of flowers and melon. It has a flavors of peach but the finish is bone dry with some high acidity.
Terra Alta, or high land, is located in Catalonia, about 125 miles north of Barcelona. The area boasts ancient vines of Garnacha Blanca, Garnacha Negre and Carinena. The hilly vineyards can reach 1,900 feet above sea level.
Whenever a wine is made with “old vines” or “ancient” vines, it catches our attention. The older the vine, the less fruit it typically produces. For wine lovers (perhaps not winemakers) that is a good thing because the grapes yield more concentrated flavors.
This is unique wine. I wanted it to be awesome, but it wasn’t. The Green Dragon, however, rates it very highly as a pairing with olives.
