Peju 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Peju
Some people have all the luck. For my birthday, I get a new pair of socks. Tasting team member Cabinator, on the other hand, got a case of assorted premium Cabernets from his loving wife.

One of the highlights of his birthday gift was the 2009 Peju Cabernet. The Peju Province Winery has been making wine in Napa Valley for more than 30 years. Their Rutherford location is famous even by Napa Valley standards.

Rutherford is at the widest part of the valley, which allows for longer sun exposure. At night the temperature can drop by more than 40 degrees, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly. “Rutherford dirt” is quite famous for its perfect grape-growing soil and distinctive flavors.

The 2009 Cab is 77% Cabernet, 15% Petit Verdot, 5% Syrah and 3% Merlot. It’s a delicious blend that is graceful with undertones of cedar and brown sugar. The wine is aged in French and American oak barrels.

The fruit is there, but it doesn’t emerge at first sip. The raspberry and blackberry notes garnish the wine, which is extremely well balanced. It is a unique and beautiful wine.

This wine retails for $45. The Peju winery site lists this as sold out, so you may have to hunt to find it on the shelves. Your effort, though, will certainly be rewarded.
