Cantele 2008 Salice Salentino Riserva

Red Cross - Wine 020The recent Exchange Club of Toledo wine tasting at the Oliver House featured many fine wines, but perhaps the most unique was the Cantele 2008 Salice Salentino Riserva. Cantele winery is in the Apulian peninsula, which is in the “heel” of the Italian “boot.”

The wine is made from 85% Negroamaro, 15% Malvasia Nera grapes. That alone is enough to pique the interest. To my knowledge, I’ve never tasted Negroamaro before.  The wine is very aromatic with odors of spices and tea apparent.

Upon sipping, this wine has flavors of candied red fruit and wood brambles.  Malolactic fermentation is used to give this wine a nice soft texture. The wine is aged for six months in small oak barriques.

Salice Salentino is low in cost (about $12), but high in unique flavor. It will pair well with a pepperoni pizza, beef or lamb.  Rating: 3 of 5, Value: 4 of 5
