Summerland 2008 Zinfandel, Paso Robles

NYE 2012 002

This Zinfandel from the Paso Robles region of California was an opening act for our New Year’s Eve get-together at our friends’ house. We enjoyed a fondue dinner along with some tasty steamed King Crab legs and drawn butter.

While my steak and chicken skewers were happily cooking in the bowl of broth, I was sipping the ‘08 Zin. Our appreciation of Zinfandel has grown in recent years – a tasty Old Vine Zin can make any evening a memorable one.

But there was a snag on the way to the NYE ball drop! This wine faded faster than the late, great Dick Clark.

The first clue was the surprisingly pale red color. Upon sipping, my first reaction was “Where’s the body?” It is surprisingly thin and weak.

There is a nice raspberry flavor – but it checks out way too soon. The finish is very abbreviated.

Summerland is known for producing some high quality single vineyard Pinot Noirs. My advice would be to skip their ‘08 Zin and surf straight to their Pinots.
