Cabernet Sauvignon in the Dry Creek Valley is relatively undiscovered. The part of Sonoma County is mostly known for Zinfandel, but there is more acreage planted in Cab than any other variety.After tasting this 2008 from Dry Creek Vineyard, we suspect Dry Creek Valley Cabs will be gaining more notoriety.
The wine is a blend of 79% Cab, 12% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot and a dash (2%) of Cab Franc. The grapes are grown on a hillside with both eastern and western exposure. The vines are between 15 and 20 years of age on average.
We enjoyed this wine on a nice summer evening when Ace of Bass and Glorious T dropped by. This is a pleasing all-round Cab with cherry and chocolate flavor notes tumbling around with some herbal flavors. The tannins are present but rounded into a smooth texture that rolls into a long, succulent finish.
The DCV 2008 Cab is pleasing to the palate as well as the wallet (going for about $25).
